What is the orientation week (german: O-Phase)?

To make sure that you get off to a great start in your studies, find your way around the (new) city, and get to know your fellow students, the Fachschaftsrat (FSR - Student Council) and the Fachgruppen (FG - student groups), together with many volonteers, organise the so called O-Phase (orientation week) for first semester students.

During the orientation week, you can expect both informative sessions - such as academic advising or a technical introduction to the university’s systems - as well as social activities like icebreaker games, a city rally and of course a party (two, actually 😄)

A key part of the orientation week is getting to know your future classmates, with whom you will likely complete many exercise sheets over the comming semesters.

When does the orientation week take place?

The orientation week takes place from October 20th to October 23rd, 2025. It’s the week before your first week of lectures. It begins on Monday at 10:00 a.m..

Where does the orientation week take place?

We will meet for the first time on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Mathematics Institute (Bunsenstraße 3-5) in the „Maximum“ (big lecture hall on the first floor GrasGeo).
The rest of the orientation week will take place in the rooms of the Mathematics Institute (MI), the Institute for Numerical and Applied Mathematics (NAM), and various locations across the city center. The party will take plaxe at Stilbrvch.

Those who cannot attend the orientation week in person, feel free to contact us via email (FG Mathmatik). In that case, we will provide you with all important information in digital form.

Rough outline of the orientation week

On Monday morning we will start with a joint welcome session. First, we - the organizing team -
will introduce ourselves and officially welcome you to the orientation week \(\varepsilon>\). You will then get an overview of the schedule and meet our awareness team along with a few other groups. After that, you will be divided into small groups where you will first get to know each other better. Together with your group, you will then head to the Mensa (cafeteria).
After Lunch, there will be an academic advising session in the Maximum, where you will learn how to create your personal timetable, what to expect in the upcoming semesters, and which application subjects you can choose.
In the evening, you will have the chance to get to know each other during a (bord) game night in Übungsaal (MI) (exercise room).
Later on, you can explore the city’s pubs in smaller groups. For that you will meet at „Platz der Göttinger 7“.

To eat at the cafeteria on Monday you will need your student ID card.

On Tuesday, we will have breakfast together at 9:30 a.m. in the Übungs-Saal. Afterwards, there will be a technical introduction to the university’s systems (StudIP, FlexNow, etc.), followed by various workshops offered by students. After that, you will have time to get lunch on your own.
At 2:00 p.m., we will meet again for the city rally at „Platz der Göttinger 7“. You will once more be divided into small groups to explore Göttingen together and play some games. If you are not interested in the rally, the university sports centre will offer a guided tour at the same time, for that we meet infront of the central cafeteria at 13:45 - you already indicated your preference during registration for the orientation week. Please arrive on time, as joining later will be difficult. Afterwards, from 6:30 p.m. onwards, there will be dinner at the MI in the Übungs-Saal, which will smoothly transition into a pub quiz in Hörsaal 1 (lecture hall 1).

On Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., we will meet again for breakfast in the Übungs-Saal. Additionally there will be a breakfast specifically for datascience students at the North-Campus (Nordcampus/NC) at the Provisorium. Wednesday morning is the so-called Cross-Over Day, which is for all students in the Two-Subject Bachelor’s programme who couldn’t attend the academic advising on Monday. Therefore, at 10:30 a.m., there will be another advising session specifically for these students at the Maximum. For everyone not in a Two-Subject programme, this means a bit of free time. In the afternoon, there will be an escape game where you can get to know the MI and the NAM. We will meet at 2:00 p.m. in the Hilbert Room, which is the foyer of the MI. At 6:00 p.m. there will be a creative evening in the Übungs-Saal. Depending on how many peolpe join, we will either be painting, writing poetry slam texts or even putting on a little play. Later in the evening at 10:00 p.m., you can party with your fellow students at Stilbrvch.

Thursday is already our final day. In the morning, there will be breakfast in the Übungs-Saal, and throughout the day workshops will be offered. If you are interested in theatre plays there will be the opportunity to watch a theatre play, for that we will meet at 7:00 p.m. at the MI and walk there together (there is only capacity for up to 15 people). The O-Phase concludes with the NC party starting at 10:00 p.m.

Where do I go if I am enrolled in a double bachelor’s program?

This year’s orientation week for teacher training (Lehramt) will take place on Tuesday, October 21st. On this day, all information related to the teaching degree will be provided so that you can attend the subject-specific events on the remaining O-Phase days.
What awaits you on Tuesday? You’ll meet at 8:30 a.m. at Café Campus and from there walk together to Waldweg.
Lehramt O-Phase

On the following day (Wednesday) is the the Cross-Over Day, during which events for your second subject will take place at the respective faculty (you will find the time and location on the corresponding website). So if you are attending the O-Phase of your other subject or are otherwise unable to be with us on Monday, you can join the maths academic advising again on Wednesday morning, specifically for Two-Subject Bachelor students.

If you are studying Mathematics and Computer Science in the Two-Subject Bachelor’s programme, you can choose which O-Phase to attend. Many activities - such as the city rally or the pub quiz - will take place jointly anyway.

Feedback zur O-Phase

We would greatly appreciate, if you would fill out the following survey after Thursday October 23th 6:00 p.m. It will help us improve future orientation weeks ^^.
